Mechanical Engineer
San Francisco & Brisbane, California
Is your garage more machine shop than parking spot?
Have you built a drone from a pile of parts, crashed it, and had it flying again the same day?
Do you dream of building a planetary scale observatory?
Mission
Mithras is developing an experimental autonomous system to supply resource targets to mining, geothermal, and other subsurface industries within the next 5 years. This means developing the roadmap for $12 trillion of minerals, 700 million tons of copper concentrate, and enough H2 to replace 5.4 trillion cubic meters of natural gas. In other words, we want to deliver on the promise of electrification and assist in moonshot interventions to stabilize climate systems.
This role is multi-scale. In reinventing a field that's been dormant for 40 years, miniaturizing it and ruggedizing at multiple scales will help build a new subsurface map for Earth. Our goal is to go after upending trillion dollar industries downstream, so you should expect this role to evolve beyond instrumentation into further field systems.
Responsibilities
- Building a highly reliable UAV
- Assist with fabrication and assembly of experimental aircraft frames utilizing processes like 3D printing, CNC machining, composite layup, etc.
- Ruggedizing aircraft and sensors for freezing environments.
- Power train explorations for high endurance.
- Structural experimentation to reduce noise on sensor suite.
- Fabricating ground sensing system enclosures and assisting with test stand construction.
- Getting out into the field, running the system, crashing, and improving.
Qualifications
- Mechanical or aerospace engineering degree or equivalent self-learning.
- 2+ years experience engineering.
- Having seen engineering choices through development, testing, and field deployment.
- Comfortable with hand tools, drill press, bandsaw, and 3D printers.
- Demonstrated balance of rigor and urgency.
- Willing to travel for field campaigns in remote areas, lift heavy UAVs, and work outdoors.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Fabrication, manufacturing, and assembly.
- Design, build, fly aircraft experience.
- Strong mechanical and structural intuition.
- Aeromechanical testing.
